Fur

More than 60 million animals are killed each year just for their fur – a product nobody needs. That equates to 2 animals every second of every day throughout the year; year in, year out. These animals are either trapped in the wild using barbaric, indiscriminate steel traps or bred in fur factory farms where animals are kept in rows of barren wire cages designed for the convenience and profitability of the operators and not the animals’ needs. Many of the essentially wild animals kept in them are driven to self-mutilation, cannibalism and stereotyped behaviour.

The EU is the largest source of fur and a major market for fur products. No civilised society should tolerate the unnecessary cruelty inherent in the fur trade and action is urgent and overdue.

Commitments sought from the Government:

  • A ban on the import and trade in fur skins, garments and other items produced by methods banned in the UK.
  • The introduction of an EU wide labeling scheme for all garments made of or trimmed with fur regardless of cost or the species of the animal used.
  • A ban on the import, export and trade in fur skins and items produced by methods banned in the EU.
