Ocean Noise Pollution
Sound is extremely important to many marine animals, particularly cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), who use it for communicating, navigating, finding food and detecting mates and predators.
Sources of man-made ocean noise include commercial shipping, military sonar, seismic surveys for oil and gas exploration, construction and recreational activities.
Commitments sought from European Parliament
- UK MEPs need to urge the UK government to take a leading role in the rigorous implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and to ensure that ocean noise pollution is properly regulated.
